Franco's Italian Army Information
Franco's Italian Army wasn't actually an army for Benito Mussolini. It was a passionate group of Pittsburgh Steelers fans formed in 1972.
Fueled by a desire to support rookie running back Franco Harris, who shared their Italian heritage, founders Tony Stagno and Al Vento rallied fellow Italian-Americans. They brought enthusiasm to the stadium with Italian flags, homemade food, and cheers.
The Army witnessed the Immaculate Reception a legendary Steelers play, and helped energize the team during a winning season. Though short-lived, the Italian Army left a lasting mark on Pittsburgh's football culture.
