Australian Air Force C-130A Hercules Information
Australia boasts a long and distinguished history with the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, becoming the first country outside the United States to operate the iconic transport aircraft. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) began service with the C-130A in 1958, replacing the workhorse Douglas C-47 Dakotas in No. 36 Squadron. The RAAF's Hercules fleet grew and evolved over the decades. In 1966, No. 37 Squadron joined the ranks with C-130Es. Upgraded C-130Hs then replaced the C-130As in 1978. The arrival of the C-130J Super Hercules in 1999 marked a significant leap forward, ultimately leading to the retirement of the C-130Hs in 2012. Today, No. 37 Squadron remains the sole operator of C-130Js within the RAAF, providing vital airlift capabilities across the region. The C-130's versatility and reliability have made it a mainstay of Australian military aviation for over 60 years.
