Australian Air Force Boeing E-7 Wedgetail Information
The Australian Department of Defence began its search for airborne surveillance and early warning systems in 1986, with industry proposals undergoing evaluation. Further studies culminated in Project AIR 5077's first phase being approved in 1994. Following this, Australia issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) in 1996 under Project Wedgetail to select the ideal aircraft. The year 1999 saw Boeing Integrated Defense Systems awarded a contract to supply four AEW&C aircraft to Australia, with the option to purchase three additional ones. Australia ultimately exercised this option, acquiring a total of 6 aircraft.
