Australian Air Force Bell Iroquois UH-1H Information
The Bell UH-1 Iroquois, also known as the Huey, first saw combat with US forces in South Vietnam. There, over 7,000 Hueys served critical roles in troop insertion, cargo transport, medical evacuation, and even ground attack. This iconic helicopter's success is reflected in its production numbers, with over 16,000 UH-1s built between 1956 and 1976, solidifying its place as one of the most successful aircraft designs ever. While New Zealand's own Iroquois helicopters never saw action in Vietnam, the conflict did involve 16 New Zealand pilots. These pilots, from No. 3 Squadron, were attached to the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF) No. 9 Squadron between 1967 and 1971. During this deployment, they flew Iroquois helicopters in vital missions such as assault operations, troop transport, resupply, and casualty evacuation.
