Australian Air Force Aermacchi MB-326 Information
The Aermacchi MB-326, a product of the "new generation" jet trainers of its era, took its first flight in December 1957. This highly successful aircraft boasted a production run of nearly 25 years, with a total of 776 built. Notably, 502 were manufactured under license, including a version specifically for the RAAF in Australia. This achievement solidified the MB-326's position as the most produced post-World War II Italian military aircraft. In the 1960s, the RAAF sought a replacement for its existing Vampire and Winjeel trainers. This pursuit aligned with a growing global trend – the adoption of an all-through-jet pilot training program. This innovative system eliminated the need for a basic piston-engined trainer in the initial training phase, as pilots would begin their instruction directly on a jet aircraft.
